Population trends in response to past and future climate:

mitigation action to prevent the decline of common land birds

2020-2022

​

Biodiversity conservation is a key component of sustainability. Birds are the most diverse and abundant group of terrestrial vertebrates in Spain and play an important ecological role. Therefore, changes in the abundance of common birds can alter the balance of ecosystems. In this project we are analyzing the population trends of common terrestrial birds in peninsular Spain during the last 20 years, and predicting their evolution for the next decades considering climate change scenarios. Species that could go into decline will be identified, and mitigation measures will be proposed to agents responsible for the management of the territory and Natura 2000 protected areas.
