After two years of work supported by the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (Fundación Biodiversidad - MITECO) and Comunidad de Madrid, this week we publish our monograph on the future of common birds in Spain. Here we consider the combined effects of climate change, habitat availability and the protection of Natura 2000 to predict the prioritary areas for the conservation of 68 species by 2050.
This work is intended to support strategical decissions related to territory management and Natura 2000 design. To promote that, all public and private entities potentially interested in these results will receive a physical copy of the monograph soon. These will include public administrations, public universities and NGOs in charge of territory management and biodiversity conservation.

Climate change is affecting the distribution and abundance of birds through the displacement of the most suitable temperature and precipitation conditions for each species. This trend is expected to continue, but areas that will be climatically suitable in the future for a species may not have suitable habitats for its survival, or may not be sufficiently protected. In this work we address these issues, predicting the spatial variation of the abundance of 68 common bird species in peninsular Spain and identifying the conservation responsibility that each Autonomous Community will have by the middle of the 21st century. The results aim to contribute to land management and the design of Natura 2000 directed to mitigate the effects of climate change on Iberian avifauna.
